According to the North Central accreditation guidelines, a school looking to become accredited has to meet the above criteria for a time period of four years before accredited. Once accredited, each institution has to reaffirm its accreditation every five to ten years.
Most of these accrediting bodies have been in existence well before many of us were born, and are accepted by the educational community as the organization that sets the base standard for educational quality. Unlike the correspondence schools of old that were not accredited by these esteemed organizations, many online schools today have earned their accreditation by surpassing the requirement of the accreditation bodies.
